Pulmonary transplant : exemplary interdisciplinary cooperation at the Hôpital Nord

The expertise of the teams of the Hôpital Nord is an interregional reference for lung transplantation.

Since the installation at the Hôpital Nord of the department of thoracic surgery directed by Professor Pascal THOMAS in 2010, nearly 250 lung transplants have been carried out.

This level of activity places the AP-HM at the second national level after the Foch hospital-foundation and in 1st place of the Centers hospitals-universities.

Patients benefit from excellence through active cooperation between specialists in several disciplines :

  • Pneumology, rare respiratory diseases, cystic fibrosis - Pr Martine REYNAUD-GAUBER
  • Thoracic surgery and esophageal diseases - Prof. Pascal THOMAS
  • Medical reanimation - Respiratory distress - Severe infections - Pr Laurent PAPAZIAN
  • Department of Anesthesia / Reanimation - Prof. Marc LEONE
  • Cardiac surgery - Pr Frédéric COLLART (Hôpitaux de La Timone)

The transplant, a matter of specialists

Many patients require a transplant. Donation offers them the hope of a healing, a second life or an improvement in their state of health.

The AP-HM is one of the establishments authorized to take organs, tissues and cells (in particular those from which blood cells originate). Depending on the type of transplant, these specimens may be carried out on living or dead donor, unless expressed.

Organ transplantation is a highly specialized reference activity: it is practiced in hospitals that have the most sophisticated technical platform and mobilizes numerous medical and paramedical teams. It is also an advanced activity, which generates research at a very high level.

The 24-hour and 24/7 hospital coordination team is composed of doctors and nurses. In conjunction with resuscitation physicians and surgeons, it plays an indispensable role in the transplant chain.

Management involves specialized medical teams, surgical teams, resuscitation anesthetists, specialized nurses, psychologists, etc. This multidisciplinary care exists at all the stages of the transplantation: selection of the patients on the grafting lists, preparation of these patients, realization of the transplant, follow-up of this one, etc. This activity requires a perfect coordination between all the Actors.

In 2015, 258 transplants were performed at Marseille Public Hospitals, including 44 lung transplants.
